Disa cornuta purple median sepals

The purple upper part of a Disa cornuta flower, the dorsal or median sepal, serves as a hood-like covering over the vital floral parts. It may become 1,2 cm wide, about 1 cm from front to back. A cylindrical spur, descending and down-curving, is visible at the back of one of the hoods in picture.

The flowers exude a honey scent and are believed to be pollinated by carpenter bees in the southwestern part of the distribution of the plant (Liltved and Johnson, 2012; iNaturalist).
