Sun and drought may denude steep slopes of the Little Karoo, at least seasonally. On the deep, flat, valley ground vygie and sewejaartjie (mesemb and Helichrysum) do their best to raise golden and pink purple banners in spring.
The thorn trees foliage may be sparse now but its colours will come. And there are others biding their time.
They all stand their ground throughout the year, rooted to peak when the opportunity arises. Their collective cycles of seasons and lives ensure food and shelter for those that pollinate their flowers and disperse their seeds.
