Sandy flats and loam soils in Little Karoo lowlands may be covered in a profusion of these yellow vygies called Malephora lutea. These plants pioneer and bind disturbed land, its presence in abundance indicating earlier overgrazing.

Ostriches, commonly seen in lucerne fields and natural veld of the Little Karoo, trample plants, eat about everything and reduce land to stark bareness, if their numbers or the duration of their grazing periods on a piece of land is not well managed (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Wikipedia).
