Strumaria gemmata is one of three species of the Strumaria genus that grow in the Little Karoo; there are 25 in all, members of the Amaryllidaceae family. The hairy leaves of this plant are seen in winter after the flowering is over.
Strumaria plants resemble some members of the Hessea genus that grow similar umbel-shaped inflorescences, but their flowers do not persist as seen upon old Hessea inflorescences.
S. gemmata used to form part of the Hessea genus in the past; unlike rugby players they rarely return to their old clubs after making a change (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Wikipedia).
