Squat Tylecodon paniculatus plants, the substantial looking botterbome (butter trees), stand like a poorly camouflaged platoon of patrolling soldiers in the soft-textured renosterveld on this Little Karoo slope.

The stem bodies much the same in height as the surrounding shrubs, it is the tall inflorescences that achieve the height advantage for summoning their pollinators effectively on bright days. The assets involved are the red flowers, the yellow stems and the bright green of the succulent leaves, giving botterboom fair assurance of seed setting.
