    The photo does not show Glottiphyllum carnosum in its prime, but possibly at its most colourful. Old fruit and dry leaves add to a diverse colour palette, prompting the occasional insect to pay respects, more likely for a bite to eat without asking.

    Modest little succulent plants endemic to the Little Karoo can deviate from green leaves and yellow flowers to celebrate Rainbow Nation myths when life is trying… the realism of the arid land citizen (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist).
