Zygophyllum retrofractum is one of about twelve Zygophyllum species found in the Little Karoo.

Its leaves, flowers and fruits smaller than several of the other, more noted species. The small pairs of stubby leaflets are unstalked on stalked leaves; both leaflets, stalks and upper stems are succulent.

The green fly visitor is probably only one of several insect pollinators of the plant (Van Rooyen and Van Rooyen, 2019; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
