Sparaxis elegans is distinguished from some other Sparaxis species by its anthers that coil around the style of the flower. The floral bracts are papery and dry, with brown marks across the pale surface.

The flowering stem may bear up to five radially symmetrical or actinomorphic flowers. This happens in the peak of the Namaqualand flower season, which occurs late in winter and early in spring.

The sword-like leaves are arranged in a fan structure (www.arkive.org).
