The bright pink flowers of Erica cubica var. cubica are mostly seen in the Langkloof from late winter to some time in autumn. The cubica name is earned by the box-like lower tube part of the corolla.

The photo was taken on the farm Spookberg near Louterwater where many, young, erect plants flowered in January on a recently cleared patch of sandstone derived, loamy soil.

The other variety of this species, var. natalensis only occurs in KwaZulu-Natal (Manning and Helme, 2024; Pooley, 1998; Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Baker and Oliver, 1967; iNaturalist).
