Lyperia tristis, the sad tearbush

This cream-flowering Lyperia tristis annual was seen in the Biedouw Valley during September. Commonly called the sad tearbush, maybe from the way the petal lobes sag around the small dark eye in the centre, the small opening to the long tube, or possibly the tear-shape of the lobes.

The corolla surfaces are uneven, one or two recessed longitudinal veins clear to see on some.

There are glandular hairs on the toothed leaves (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
