Crassula subaphylla var. subaphylla

Encountered in a stony spot in the Kouga Valley, the Crassula subaphylla var. subaphylla plant sports decussate leaf-pairs. They are fairly close together on the few, branched stems but widely spaced on the flower peduncles grown from stem-tips.

The flowers that cluster in flat-topped inflorescences near the end of summer and well above the plant’s leafy part were long gone at the time of the May photo. The brown, withered remains were still up for the photo, parading on long, red peduncles.

The other recognised variety of C. subaphylla, viz. var. virgata, is found in Namaqualand (Smith, et al, 2017; iNaturalist).
