Asparagus setaceus, the common asparagus fern, is a rhizomatous climber that also grows at Nature’s Valley. This is one of the most attractive of the about 120 Asparagus species growing naturally in southern Africa.

Asparagus appeal is generally found in their false leaves or cladodes, of course excluding the edible species. The small flowers are generally numerous in season, white or greenish, the ripe, spherical berries red or black; both features admired.

    A. setaceus is welcome in many gardens, naturally growing in the southern and eastern parts of South African veld but these days unwelcome in many countries where it has become an invader. Its ripe berries are black, should not be eaten (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Wikipedia).
