The imparipinnate leaves of Ekebergia capensis are alternate, crowded or spiralling at stem-tips and often droop. The stalkless, otherwise short-stalked leaflets occur in three to eight pairs, plus the terminal one to make the leaf imparipinnate.

The leaflet shape is ovate to elliptic. Their margins are entire and sometimes wavy. The attenuated leaflet tips are known as drip-tips, functioning that way when wet.

The tree is evergreen or semi-deciduous. It is also dioecious, bearing male and female flowers on different trees (Venter, 2012; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Pooley, 1993).
