Ximenia caffra var. caffra is often only a shrub on the Magaliesberg, although not always, as seen here. There is a distinct yellow-brown colouring on this tree, compared to its neighbours. The young leaves of this variety usually have a rusty hair covering.
The dark green, leathery leaves of the small, gnarled trees and the grey main stems stand out in the vegetation mix. This mix that usually surprises with the large number of species represented in the wooded patches, is maintained by baboons and other sourplum consumers who drop seeds everywhere they go (Carruthers, 1990).
