Ficus ingens

Some spectacular spreading Ficus ingens trees reside along the lower southern slopes and close to the foot of the Magaliesberg. The huge, pale grey lower stems curve randomly, like elephantine limbs entwined among rocky outcrops and other trees.

Always ensconced upon rock, they sometimes outgrow and outlive competing vegetation to become the prime shelter for many animals and birds. On hot days the shade of a centuries old Magaliesberg red-leaved rock fig can be an oasis for hikers.
