This tall marula tree, Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra to use its proper name, is in leaf transition in July. New growth is sprouting while some of the old season’s leaves have not departed yet, rendering its leafless rest to a short break only.
The nyala bull leisurely surveying the grassland under the scattered trees is sure to have a few ewes close by, smaller and lighter coloured than himself (Wikipedia; www.plantzafrica.com).
