Haworthiopsis glauca var. herrei

Haworthiopsis glauca var. herrei is a small leaf-succulent branching at the base to form clumps of leaf rosettes on elongated stems.

The spreading or sometimes incurved leaves are lanceolate and keeled, tapering gradually to acutely pointed tips. Leaf colour is dark green to grey-green, the surfaces rough from a covering of scattered tubercles and sometimes a couple of longitudinal lines along the upper surface.

The inflorescence stands 40 cm tall. Its single raceme of 13 cm bears from 13 to 20 spirally arranged flowers. The flowers are white, the segment keels either brown or green. The flower tube of 4 mm long is compressed at the back and funnel-shaped, opening wider at the mouth; the segment tips curve further out.

The distribution of this variety is mainly in the south-eastern Karoo from Willowmore to Jansenville. The habitat is semi-arid karoid scrub and exposed slopes in firm loamy and sandy soils (Scott, 1985; www.llifle.com; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
