Haworthiopsis coarctata var. coarctata stems, young and old

This multistemmed Haworthiopsis coarctata var. coarctata plant had no problem expanding its size by adding stems through branching in the awkward space offered by the rocks where it lives.

In the proliferation of stems over the years, some densely leaved stems aged and eventually gave up the struggle, while persisting in the stem community for photos to come. Colouring divulges stem and leaf age differences, while height showed the individual stem achievements. Most old flower stems have departed, keeping secrets concerning the plants flower, fruit and seed production record.

Some stems in picture have broken off in the past, growing new roots where they fell. They can be seen next to the rock, colonists on new land. Orphan or migrant, such marooned stem has to roll into position with the right side up, for this venture to be successful. A dry, upside down, leafy stem confirms the sad fate awaiting the unsuccessful ones for whom the roll of the stem proves less fortunate (Frandsen, 2017; Scott, 1985; iNaturalist).
