Heliophila amplexicaulis buds

    Heliophila amplexicaulis buds

The buds of Heliophila amplexicaulis are purplish brown. Four pale, longitudinal seams are visible while the (four) pointed sepals still cohere at the conical bud tip. The buds are borne on long, slender, straight pedicels.

The rounded petals that push the calyx open are more than double sepal length. Partly open buds, variously shaped, are visible in the photo, as are white-fringed sepals in the gaps between the petals of open flowers (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
