Hypoxis flowers in general are yellow and star-shaped, while the leaves are strap-shaped. Hypoxis hemerocallidea has broad recurving leaves and comparatively large, bright flowers.
The plant has been a famous medicinal resource in Southern Africa for a long time. It is commonly known as the African potato that obtained doubtful fame during the early search for cures of the HIV-AIDS pandemic.
Apart from many kinds of Hypoxis in Africa, there are yet more species growing in North and South America, Asia and Australia.
This plant was photographed near Roossenekal in December.
