The leaves of Hermannia pinnata are tufted or appear whorled, due to the lobed stipules. The blades are narrowly obovate with uneven margins from spaced teeth or being deeply lobed. The blades are faintly shiny green and often channelled along the sunken midribs.

The stalks of the scented, nodding flowers that grow from leaf axils are similarly hairy, as are the pointed calyces folded around the base of each yellow or orange corolla. Orange corolla colour fades gradually to paler orange as the flowers age. There is some ambiguity as to flower colour of this species.

The younger branches are green here, acquiring a red tinge as they age while retaining their covering of short hairs (Manning, 2007; iNaturalist; www.plantzafrica.com).
