Hermannia transvaalensis is a perennial Highveld herb with prostrate stems emanating from an underground woody rootstock. The leaves are alternate, ovate with a heart-shaped base, roughly toothed with a coarse surface and often a bronze tinge.

Pendulous apricot-coloured to yellow flowers appear in spring until autumn in two-flowered cymes, i.e. the centre or upper flower opens first (Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982; www.sntc.org.sz).
