Holothrix randii

Holothrix randii is a terrestrial orchid growing annual, above-ground parts from its perennial, ovoid and hairy tuber. One or two oval to almost round leaves with small, pointed tips are positioned flat on the ground. The leaf surface is smooth, hairless and green, reaching a diameter of about 4 cm. The leaves have withered by flowering time.

The habitat of H. randii is rocky outcrops in grassland from Gauteng to Kenya. The plant is considered near threatened due to urban development and agricultural activity in too big parts of its distribution area. This specimen was photographed on a rocky ridge in Johannesburg, surviving in a cherished spot of natural Witwatersrand beauty remaining in the city (iSpot; Van Wyk and Malan, 1997; Lowrey and Wright, 1987).
