The Ballota africana leaves in picture are more heart-shaped than rounded. They were seen near Oudtshoorn.

The usual pattern of sunken venation is in evidence, the margins angularly toothed and roundly scalloped in irregular patterns. The blades are here pale to slightly yellow-green, all borne horizontally, which is not usual for these plants.

The petioles are longish, appearing channelled on top and somewhat angular rather than terete (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
