Amellus tridactylus subsp. olivaceus withering flowerhead

The flowerheads of Amellus tridactylus subsp. olivaceus grow solitary on erect peduncles above the leaves.

The green involucre consists of one row of bulging, narrow bracts that are hairy and acutely pointed with membranous margins.

One row of mauve-blue female ray florets surround a yellow disc comprising numerous, fertile, five-lobed disc florets. The flowerhead is about 2 cm in diameter. 

The fruits to follow will be elliptic and flat. The pappuses consist of fringed scales and a few barbed bristles.

Flowering happens from before midwinter to early spring (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
