Commelina erecta flower

The bright blue flowers of Commelina erecta grow in small clusters in boat-like, folded spathes that have short stalks. The flowers cluster (in cymes) at the stem tips.

The flower has two large, roundly obovate petals as well as a tiny third one that is scale-like; the sepals are fused. The lower three stamens are fertile, the upper three sterile. Flower diameter is up to 15 mm.

Flowers are short-lived, closing late in the morning of their opening. The flowers are wet inside. Flowering happens all year long (Manning, 2009; Van Wyk and Malan, 1997; Pooley, 1998; Blundell, 1992).
