Monopsis debilis var. gracilis

Monopsis debilis is a sprawling or tufted annual with stems reaching 25 cm in length, 15 cm in height. The delicate flowers are not often seen in large numbers. This specimen is thought to be var. gracilis, one of three varieties comprising the species.

The species is found in the Northern Cape and Western Cape from Namaqualand to the Langeberg Mountains. The variety grows in part of this distribution including the northerly region. It is a South African endemic. The photo was taken in Namaqualand west of Springbok. 

The plants grow in moist places on sandy flats and slopes. The one in picture was positioned almost in the course of a seasonal mountain stream. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Eliovson, 1990; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
