Erodium cicutarium red sepal tips

The Erodium cicutarium petals spread in the photo, alternating with the roughly equal sized and shaped green sepals, apart from two sepals that seem to be stuck together behind a petal.

Ample pollen grains appear ready for clinging to itinerant insects seeking flower food.

The hairy buds around the open flower have red sepal tips. They do not close sufficiently in all cases any longer to hide the yellow of the anthers, still paler than the ripe ones in the centre.

The blue object peeping out from a sepal margin defies explanation (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Shearing and Van Heerden, 2008).
