Scopelogena verruculata flowers

The sweetly scented flowers of Scopelogena verruculata are small and yellow, growing in many-flowered clusters. The five sepals, tapering to acutely pointed tips, are not quite equal in size as can be seen in one of the unopened buds in picture. Still, the flowers are radially symmetrical, the oblong petals roughly in one ring; their tips are rounded.

A large, dense cluster of stamens, their white filaments yellow near the tips, have white or creamy yellow, oblong anthers positioned horizontally. In the centre among the stamens a creamy yellow style is visible, thickly fleshy and of similar length as the stamens.

Flowering happens late in spring; this photo was taken in November.

Later there will be a woody fruit capsule with five locules that form a bulging top. The plant produces brown to black seeds with rough surfaces (Smith, et al, 1998; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984).
