Galenia sarcophylla

Galenia sarcophylla, in Afrikaans Joubertsbrakbossie (the little brackish bush of Joubert), is a prostrate shrublet growing mat-forming branches of about 40 cm long. The stems are usually red and hairy.

The species distribution is in the west of the country, particularly the Northern Cape, the west of the Free State and the Eastern Cape, the drier parts of the Western Cape, as well as in Namibia.

The plant grows on flats and slopes in sandy or clay soils in the arid parts of the country, thriving in brackish soils. It is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Shearing and Van Heerden, 2008; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
