The bisexual flowers of Clematis villosa subsp. stanleyi grow solitary or in small clusters from stem-tips. The sweetly scented flowers nod on long pedicels.

There are four (or here also five) large, oblong and round-ended sepals with small protruding acute tips around the stamens and styles. There are no petals in this species, the sepals petal-like, concave and slightly wavy to wrinkly. They form a shallow bowl, the colour variations include cream, nearly white, pale pink and pale purple.

There are numerous yellow-anthered stamens, as well as many, single-ovule carpels, each ending in a long, hairy style (Germishuizen and Clarke, 2003; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Van Wyk and Malan, 1997; iNaturalist; https://www.zimbabweflora.co.zw).
