A covering of flowerheads on Elytropappus rhinocerotis may obscure the leaves in the abundance of the floral stem regions.

Whether there has been recent rain or not, the long taproot of an E. rhinocerotis plant will allow the green at stem tips to rise quickly above the flowering section of stems, stretching narrow new growth well over the flowerheads.

These plants are very drought tolerant, an advantage coupled with their low appeal among browsers. This allows them domination of vegetation in terrain that suits them (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; Wikipedia; www.plantsinstock.co.za).
