Pavonia burchellii leaves

Pavonia burchellii leaves have busy margins: toothed or scalloped and lobed parts may all be present among the meanderings of these edges. The leaf is so elaborately lobed at the back that its base appears to be near the centre of the leaf.

The leaf veins radiate from the leaf base, sometimes branching higher up in the blade. Some indented secondary veining is visible but quickly becoming indistinct in the finer branching. Only the lowest parts of main veins show substance in their cream-coloured sections.

The pale to bright green leaves are paler on their lower surfaces. Leaf size is 2 cm to 8 cm by 1 cm to 7 cm.

The green flower remains in picture is an epicalyx of five, sometimes six bracts. The calyx is still enveloped inside the epicalyx around the ovary while the corolla is by now lost (Manning, 2009; Pooley, 1998; Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982; iSpot).
