Peliostomum virgatum leaves and flower profile

The leaves of Peliostomum virgatum are simple, ascending on short stalks in spiralling formation up the straight stems. The leaf-shape is elliptic to ovate, the tips very slightly obtusely pointed to rounded. The base is rounded and the margins entire.

The pale dull green surfaces are hairy, sticky and about flat, occasionally curving out slightly, rendering the upper surface convex. The leaf becomes about 12 mm long.

The palatable leaves are browsed by game and stock.

The thin, purple stripes along the corolla tube surface stop at the base where the tube becomes narrow. At the other end they become bolder and some merge before disappearing behind the lobes curving back. The still closed buds are dark-tipped once they gain mature length (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; iNaturalist).
