This new Hoplophyllum spinosum bud growth after rain in August near Vanrhynsdorp is red and lush, the bract tips veering loosely away from the bud. These bract tips may also be spine-like.

The spine-shaped leaves have zebra-striped surfaces, their brown tips strong, sharp and seemingly not dried out. Young growth may be whiter than the leaves generally or particularly the old ones (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; Wikipedia).
