The green Ekebergia capensis fruit in picture have scattered brown dots upon their pale surfaces. Their pedicels are shorter and browner than the leaf petioles.

The fruit will be bright red when ripe, popular with birds, monkeys and baboons. The Bunea alcinoe moth, a kind of emperor moth, uses this tree as a food plant. Their larvae also called amaCimbi caterpillars are like mopane worms, also known as emperor moths. Both kinds of caterpillars are collected and eaten by local people (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Pooley, 1993).
