The leaves of Loxostylis alata grow spiralling up the stems on petioles of up to 2,5 cm. The leaves are imparipinnate, meaning compound with two to five opposite leaflet pairs as well as a terminal leaflet.

The rachis is winged, the hairless leaflets without petiolules and their slender blades glossy dark green. Leaflet margins are rolled under and their is a hair-like tip or mucro. Young leaves may be coral pink, coppery or yellowish (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993).
