Flueggea virosa subsp. virosa green fruit

The fruit on this Flueggea virosa subsp. virosa shrub are still green, clustered among the leaves. There is a fruit stalk of up to 1 cm in length and a small warty knob at the fruit tip, a part of the style remaining.

When these fruits turn white the birds, game and some children go for them.

Leaf veining is well displayed on the twig in picture. The dominant midrib, in-curving lateral veins and roughly reticulated net-veining, all cream-coloured, are visible upon both leaf surfaces with a hint of translucence against the light.

Lower leaf surfaces are paler green than the upper ones. The leaf tips are notched, rounded or slightly, obtusely pointed. Creamy leaf petioles of the alternate leaves ascend next to the stem in several cases in the photo (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Pooley, 1993; Codd, 1951; iSpot).
