Clematis brachiata, or traveller’s joy, is a vigorous climber with spreading hairy stems. The leaves are compound, each made up of three to five leaflets. The leaves are hairy on their lower surfaces only. The leaf edges are irregularly toothed. The flowers start appearing at the end of summer in aromatic cymes with white petals and prominent clusters of yellow stamens. The plant is commonly found on trees and fences in southern Africa, including the northern parts of South Africa (Fabian and Germishuizen, 1982).
