Clitoria ternatea, the butterfly pea

The leaves of Clitoria ternatea, the butterfly pea or cordofan pea are pinnate (compound) with five to seven leaflets. The uneven number means that there is a terminal leaflet present, making the leaf structure imparipinnate.

Leaflet shape is elliptic, tapering to its base and acute tip. Leaflets are folded in along their midribs. Widely spaced, parallel, lateral veins curve gradually away from the margin, which is not quite reached.

The plant is used in flower gardens as well as for revegetation, for example on Australian coalmine sites (Blundell, 1987; iSpot; Wikipedia).
