Rhodocoma gigantea male spikelets

The pendulous male Rhodocoma gigantea spikelets grow on numerous small branches in panicles at several upper nodes of the male plant culms. The species is dioecious, therefore the female spikelets are on separate plants, not pendulous.

A few florets develop in each spikelet with cartilaginous to papery, brown bracts around them. The male florets have three stamens.

Female spikelets also have subtending bracts and six unequal perianth segments, the outer ones longer and slender. There are three styles in a floret. The fruit is a capsule (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
