Coiled leaves are mostly found on a small group of bulbous plant species growing in arid conditions where it rains in winter and cold winds take their toll.

One advantage of spiralled leaves may be the protection of the leaves from being frayed in strong wind. Another relates to photosynthesis: a limited but certain percentage of leaf surface is continually presented to direct sunlight.

The phenomenon occurs in several parts of the world, such as western parts of the Americas, particularly also in southern Africa.

Coiled leaves are not tendrils that perform another function for other plant types in different conditions (https://janemming.com).
