Trichilia emetica subsp. emetica reaches magnificent proportions when growing in alluvial soils close to rivers. In the southwest of the Kruger National Park, near Pretoriuskop, where the rainfall is lavish, tall Natal mahogany trees grow far from water in open bushveld in granitic soil.

The dense foliage of this tree can be depended upon for providing good shade on hot days for becoming intimate with mosquitoes (Schmidt, et al, 2002; Pooley, 1993; Codd, 1951; iNaturalist).
