Struthiola striata

Struthiola striata belongs to the Thymelaeaceae or Daphne family of plants. The genus name of Struthiola comes from the Greek strouthos for ostrich, referring to the feathery or plume-like flower spikes seen almost all year round.

The spirited Afrikaans name juffertjie-roer-by-die-nag (young lady moves at night) for the Struthiola genus may inspire some nature lovers to check these plants after dark. And be inspired by the scent they produce only in the dark... aimed at moths.

The species also has interesting Afrikaans common names: roemanaggie (or roemenaggie) and veertjie (little feather) in line with the ostrich connection. It would be interesting to learn the etimology of roemanaggie (Manning, 2009).
