Kniphofia caulescens is a robust, clump-forming perennial of the high elevation regions in the Drakensberg. Where water seeps from crevices in outcrops and rocky sheets among the grasses, this plant finds a perch from which to make a statement that adds to mountain personality.

The dense, conical racemes are bicoloured with exserted stamens. Flowering happens from midsummer to early autumn (Manning, 2009).
