Aloidendron dichotomum and Namaqualand Klipkoppe

Usually not quite mountains, the Klipkoppe or stone heads of Namaqualand present themselves as granite outcrops of many shapes and sizes. Kamiesberg, Spektakelberg and some others are called mountains, while the hills in many parts don’t qualify for the big league.

Whether hills or mountains, their good looks in the natural state are not disputed. Apart from being adorned in red, blue and brown granite surfaces, some rocks here present the pale green patina of copper exposed to the elements. A series of chemical reactions accompany only the surface oxidation of the metal, leaving the unaffected copper safe below in ore form.

There is a long history of human interest in mining and precious stones in the region, particularly copper. Limits to the commercial potential have retained much of the countryside pretty for posterity. Annual floral celebrations further liven up the land around the hills and the quiver trees, should views like this not speak strongly enough themselves.
