Orchids of great variety abound in the South African grassland. A stroll in the grassland requires vigilance for plant discoveries as much as for avoiding snakes.
These Habenaria epipactidea plants were found flowering near Bronkhorstspruit in January. Summer rains stimulate the growth of a sturdy stem from the underground base. Flowers are presented at up to 50 cm above the ground, tall enough for sharing sun, wind and cameras over the grass.
Important processes of survival, including photosynthesis, pollination and seed dispersal continue uninterrupted through the summer season, while creating a festive holiday atmosphere for the casual visitor.
The slightly smaller plant in picture has so far grown buds only; lower flowers are already open on the taller one. Distinguish between spurs and lips protruding downwards from flowers and some of the buds (Manning, 2009).
