Cyperus obtusiflorus var. flavissimus is a slender, erect sedge growing from a horizontal rhizome. Its leaves are basal, sheathing and linear to narrowly lanceolate in shape.

The bright yellow to honey coloured inflorescence is compact, several tiny spikelets arranged in a many-pointed cluster. A white variety, var. obtusiflorus, exists. Flowering happens from mid-spring to midsummer.

The species distribution lies in the east and northern parts of South Africa and widespread in southern Africa. The habitat is open grassland, usually the somewhat damp parts. The species is not threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982; www.wildflowernursery.co.za; iSpot; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
