Orthochilus welwitschii may flower well in the summer rainfall grass of eastern and northern South Africa. The pale to bright yellow flowers with contrasting maroon lip side-lobes are clustered densely at the top of a long flower stalk. Flowers are seen in the grass late in spring and during summer.
It is said that some young Zulus use infusions from the tubers of this orchid when courting (Pooley, 1998; Manning, 2009).
