    The gauzy Sarcocaulon crassicaulis petals appear far too delicate for life in the severe conditions of South Africa’s harsh northwest.

    They look fragile for they are fragile; fortunately not required to last beyond one or a few fleeting pollination events occurring in the flower centre. A bridal dress has no use on the morning after.

    Anthers spread carousel-style around the five pale stigma branches; all far too tempting for any life-loving insect to pass by without a quick tasting... or a lingering one (Le Roux, et al, 2005).
